the roots of the park

washington square park has a dark history that everyone seems to have forgotten. before becoming the washington square we know today, the site was a potter field. a place to bury anyone that could not afford to be buried elsewhere. after the yellow fever, the mass buried reach it’s limit and mayor Philip Home decided to place a park on the site. however, he left no monument of any kind to remember the people once buried there.

with this archive, i want to remember these forgotten people. some years ago, a few remains of a casket were found while doing some pipe work under the park. i want to archive this remains and any past and future remains found in the site. the cube is placed in the middle of the main pathway of the park as to block the path of the people walking so it can’t be ignored.
